European Athletics (EAA) News - More European cities to stage world championships
The Danish delegation has acknowledged that they are up against a strong rival for the honour with both Cheboksary itself and Russia in general having a fantastic athletics tradition.
n addition to London's high profile bid for the 2017 IAAF World Championships, two other European cities are expected to be on the world championship calendar after a series of decisions about the location of future events is made in Monaco on Friday. The Polish city of Sopot, near Gdansk, is the only candidate for the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships after Zagreb, Croatia, withdrew while the right to stage the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships is being contested between the Danish capital of Copenhagen and the Russian city of Cheboksary.
“Following the global triumph of cycling’s World Road Race Championships in September, Copenhagen is aiming to make the same success of the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in 2014,”said the Copenhagen bid team in a press release.
A delegation of representatives from the city of Copenhagen, the Danish Athletic Federation and Sport Event Denmark will present their bid on Friday outlining a fast, flat and scenic course in the very heart of Copenhagen.
The Copenhagen bid team hope that many of the 250,000 spectators who lined the circuit on the final day of the cycling would go out on to the streets again.
“Our philosophy is that a great event is one where participants, viewers and stakeholders have equal satisfaction. The case of Copenhagen is very strong. In a world of global media, each Championship represents a chance to leave an international legacy and our aim is to give as much to the Half Marathon Championships in 2014 as they will undoubtedly give to us,” says Lars Lundov, Chief Executive Officer of Sport Event Denmark.
Wilson Kipketer, the former 800m world record holder and still the European record holder over two laps of the track and an IAAF Ambassador will also be at the Danish presentation.
“I can really say that Copenhagen is a running city where people of all ages run in the streets. Denmark will welcome the World Half Marathon Championships as they did with the World Road Race Championships in cycling,” added Kipketer.
The Danish delegation has acknowledged that they are up against a strong rival for the honour with both Cheboksary itself and Russia in general having a fantastic athletics tradition.
