Valencia Half Marathon - Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai - winner in 59:30,

Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai, on his first ever half marathon run outside of his country Kenya, won today the Valencia Half Marathon with an outstanding performance of 59:30, beating his colleague Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich who made another outstanding chrono of 59:33, all in a new participation race which with 6050 entries ended with 5.353 finishers.

We the organizers knew this was a possible objective. A very competitive course, a mild weather (18ºC at the start, 20ªC at the finish time), and a little wind, the talented elite team had the perfect conditions to reach the organizers target of running below the hour.

Guided by the first pacemaker Boniface Kirui, the head of the race crossed the 5K on 14:02, and the 10K on 28:21, and the 15K on 42:34, where only Mutai and Kiprotich kept the lead of the race..

The triomph was decided on the last 800 meters, thru a strong shot of the winner with the same strategy as he did at the Eindhoven Marathon, rushing in the last kilometers.

Both Mutai and Kiprotich said that without wind they might have made even a better performance, maybe 20 to 30 seconds better.

In the women race, there was no fight, and Beatrice Jepchumba from Kenya leaded the race from the start to the end, crossing the finish line in 1:15:31.

Finally, this performance makes Valencia becoming one of the eleven best half marathons ever world wide.

Congratulations to Paco Borao, the Race Director of the Valencia Marathon!
