"The Artifact of the Month" VIII. - Museum Rarities from the AIMS Marathon Museum of Running - Berlin Sports Museum - Tokyo Marathon and Athens Classic Marathon - Horst Milde Reports

Just last week, two important packages arrived at the museum from Japan and Greece: the Tokyo Marathon and der Athens Classic Marathon sent the museum an impressive volume of materials.

Ever since the 9th AIMS World Congress in Macau in 1994, the Berlin Sports Museum carries the additional name "AIMS Marathon Museum of Running". The Congress decided to make the Berlin Sports Museum "its" museum, meaning that races from all around the world were to send their commemorative information to Berlin to be stored and documented.

The worldwide association of running event organisers AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) supports the museum financially as well. Of course the most important aspects of a museum are the collection of sufficient materials for the collection and making them available to the public.

AIMS is proud of the Berlin museum, which through its diverse collections has become a centre of excellence for the sport of running and athletics, and AIMS officially has named it the "jewel of its organisation"! There is nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

It is not an easy task, however, to collect artefacts from running events around the world. It is a complicated matter to receive materials from about 320 events in 80 countries on five continents, and many organisers do not yet understand the importance of sending us their race numbers, posters, invitations, medals, documents, result lists and souvenirs.

Just last week, two important packages arrived at the museum from Japan and Greece: the Tokyo Marathon and der Athens Classic Marathon sent the museum an impressive volume of materials.

The Tokyo Marathon has developed over the past five years from a purely elite event with a few hundred athletes to an event with about 40,000 participants (and 280,000 applications!), thus reflecting the rapid development of the event. The Athens Marathon also made a leap ahead. The 2,500-year anniversary of the Battle of Marathon in 2010 drew attention to the race, which has seen record numbers since.

The materials from both of these races provide an important addition to the museum collection. Race Director of the Tokyo Marathon, Tad Hayano, visited the museum recently and was amazed at the volume of documents from Japan, and was especially interested in the exhibition case displaying several objects from Japanese female Olympic Champion Naoko Takahashi, who ran a world record at the Berlin Marathon on September 30, 2001 in 2:19:46.

The AIMS Marathon Museum is now also well known in Japan, as "RUNNERS", the largest running magazine in Japan with a monthly circulation of over 270,000 copies, recently had an article about the museum, including several photos.

The jacket (see photo) worn by the president of the Tokyo Marathon, Hiroaki Chosa - also a former president of AIMS - also astounded Hayano. It was the jacket Chosa wore for the starting shot of the Tokyo Marathon and it was a customised limited edition (only three were made) created by the main sponsor ASICS: The mayor of Tokyo got one, the president of ASICS one, and Hiroaki Chosa the other.  Chosa sent his in to the museum shortly thereafter on my request-a wonderful gesture on his part.

There is a large deposit of archival materials from the Athens Marathon, the mother of all marathons, in the museum archives - partly due to the fact that the AIMS Symposium takes place in Marathon every year - and the collection demonstrates how event organisers can contribute to "their" museum.

Thanks Tokyo Marathon and Athens Classic Marathon for these donations - I hope this may be an example for other AIMS organizers to do the same - so we hope to get material and items from USA, Canada and South America!"
